I have found it useful to know how much time is available in a year as this helps with planning. This simple post may help people that are trying to set long term goals. This post is based on a typical person that works full time in the UK, but the principles are the same for all other countries.

I find that websites such as www.timeanddate.com and www.work-day.co.uk simplify the process of calculating the number of working days. In the table below I have worked out an example of an individual working 35 hours a week, with 25 days paid leave, and allowed for 1 hour for commuting and 1 hour for work-related preparation tasks per day.
| Days in 2023 | 365 |
| Weekend days | 105 |
| Public holidays (England) | 8 |
| Leave days assumption (25 days) | 25 |
| Working days | 227 |
| Working hours assumption (7H x 227) | 1589 |
| Travel to work and other tasks (2H x 227) | 454 |
| Sleep hours assumption (8H x 365) | 2920 |
| Non-working hours available (365 days x 24H, minus above) | 3797 |
It may be surprising for some to note that there is almost twice as much sleep time in a year when compared to work hours. What I found particularly interesting when I did this calculation for the first time was the number of free hours available. There is almost 2.5 times more hours available for other interests than is spent on working. Hope this is helpful with your planning.
